A Thrifty Book Tip

Hello everybody. I just wanted to share a little thrifty tip with you.
I just love to read, as I'm sure there are alot of people out there who do. But as we are well aware of, or...... maybe it's just me, books can be very expensive.
I've seen some books at the thrifty stores. But none that caught my eye. I seen some at the Salvation Army that were good priced but only a couple had caught my eye.
So I went to used book stores and they were selling them for over $10 for hardcover. Not much of a deal for used books.
Well.....hellooooo! I went to my local library. Bingo!!!!!
-Hardcover $1.50
-Softcover 50 cents...
*Note* I just paid for a years subscription on National Geographics. One of my FAVORITE magazines. I got a swell price for $15. w/ a world map.
-magazines @ the library 25 cents!
Hey, so what if I read September's in October!!!! I'm a slow reader anyway. It takes me a long time to finish a book. I'm jealous of folks who can zip through a book in a day or two......like my DAUGHTER!!! I'll give her a book and the next day she'll call and to say that she finished the book. She's a mother of two small boys at that!
-One plastic bag full of books that have a red dot on the binder for $1.00!! Yep, can you believe it?! Hello! Where have I been?!!!! I need to get with the program!!! I've been spending to much time at Barnes and Noble and Borders! So please, visit your libraries for used books to purchase.
At the library I found these two old cookbooks. One was from 1977. I know, I know. But these are time worn classic recipes. And this book was chalked full of 500 recipes and 150 pictures. You just can't find recipe books like this anymore. Where every recipe looks good. The cookbooks they have out now a days, lets face it, you only get a hand full of recipes out of them that you will use. That's why I picked up 'The Family Cookbook.' These books by the way were in fabulous condition.
Also I picked up Better Homes and Gardens, New Dieter's Cook Book. I mean every single page has a photo and recipe on it. The picture I took of the book doesn't show how thick and solid this book is.
There must be at least 300 recipes w/ photos in it!

All of the recipes look so yummy that I can't believe that this book is called The New Dieters Cook Book.
Yep, and these two cookbooks were only $1.50 each.
Was I there at the library looking for cookbooks?............well no. I was looking for short stories, classic literature and poems. And they did have a lot. But none that caught my eye. But how could I pass these two beauties up?!
Talking about beauties........look at this big beauty...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mmhmm. Okay. Confession here. So I did get this at Border's. You know how I've been liking that strange ole' Poe guy. When it said 'COMPLETE' tales & poems for...................$7.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! (Gosh, not God, lol!) Well by golly. I could not pass by this steal of a deal!
Border's.........you rock!!!!!!!!! Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Yay. I got this in the BARGAIN section. But you know what? That is good enough for this little ole' lady! Oh by the way. Just a little tid bit. Did you know that October is dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe? Found that out also at my local library.
I'm signing off..........from Peek-A-Boo street!!!!

Ouch!

Well this morning as I was getting on my make up and getting ready to get my son off to school. How many of you ladies use these eye lash curling gadgets?

How many have you turned your head to look at your cute dog in the morning and then there goes your upper lashes? Mmhmm. Pulled out by the roots. I mean, yanked out by the roots. It happened to me this morning. Not a very good thing to happen first thing in the morning.

It's my fault though. This has happened to me before with my fingers slipping into the handles. This one is a Revlon product. I couldn't find the Cover Girl one with the rubbery blue, coated handle, so I grabbed this one instead. Before only a few eye lashes came out. This morning almost half my upper lid of lashes came out. Boy, I do hope they grow back soon. I have to go to church on Sunday. If I glob a little bit more of mascara on, you can't tell to badly. So I'm going to throw this lash curler away and go up to my local drug store and get me back my Cover Girl eye lash curler. Huh. Us woman have to go through so much to look nice, don't we? My husband says he still loves me. Eye lash-less or not. Bless his heart. He better!

If you do have this Revlon lash curler, please use with caution. My fingers just slip on these metal handles.

On another note, I just wanted to show you what I found at the thrift shop the other day.

This miniature tea set was brand new in the box. It's so cute and dainty. If you click on the pic, you will be able to see the roses on it close up. I don't know if you can tell, but the tray it heart shaped. I just thought it was so pretty. I'm setting it by my antique doll that I have in my parlour/office.

P.S. I bet your still laughing about my ordeal with the eyelash curler. It's ok. (lol)

Have a fabulous day!

I'm signing off..........from Peek-A-Boo Street!
(Added this photo later.) I found my CoverGirl eye lash curler. For when my eyelashes start to grow back. =)

Some Good News

The other day, I got some good news. My grandson is going to be baptized. My daughter asked me if my husband and I would be my grandson's Godparents! Woohoo! Yippee! We are so honored to have been asked to be Godparents for another one of my grandchildren. My husband and I feel so honored and blessed.
I just want to thank my daughter and my son-in-law for thinking of us when they both chose us to be their son's Godparent. Thank you both so much for thinking of Dad and I. We love you all so very much. We are just so touched.
And what wonderful parents you both are for getting your baby baptized. Your following what God is asking of you to do as parents. All couples make that promise to God at the moment of Holy Matrimony. That they will pass the religion on to their children. Dad and I are so proud of the both of you. The whole family loves and supports your family. Can you feel our arms around you? Well maybe those are God's arms to. ♥

British Literature

While my son and I are reading Peter Pan, I've started another classic, Ethan Frome and Summer.
My gosh, I can't believe how good it really is. I read it for most of the day yesterday.
And in the back of this book I am reading now, it has three lists. One, a list of Amercan Literature books. The other is British Literature. World Literature. And Anthologies.
The lists aren't to long. But instead of writing them in one post. I'm going to break it up over the next few posts for labeling reasons. I have to admit that I have not read to many of these classic stories, but I sure would like to. I'm on a mission. Some I think my son will enjoy, like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I think that it is important for a parent to read to their children. So why not throw some literature in the mix sometimes. I want my son to grow up and reread the ones he has heard before as a child and the ones he was to young to read at the time. But I want my son to remember that his Mom read him a few of those classic stories. Did he understand The Adventures of Alice and Wonderland? I don't know. Did I? I would like to go back and reread it sometime. It is different when your reading it out loud to another instead of reading it to yourself. Plus, you can pick up on somethings the second time around. That is what's so neat about reading literature. You can keep going back to read these classics again and again in your life time. These are the books you can keep forever on your bookshelf.
I have to say, that I like the classic books best at Barnes & Noble better than at Borders. The Borders books are slightly cheaper but the Barnes and Noble Classic Literature books are for one hard cover, which I like. It will stay nice for years to come. A lot of these books are for under $10, even though they come in hard cover. Which is really nice. Also in the Barnes and Noble ones, you get a long introduction to the story as well, which you do not in the Border books. At the back of the Border classic literature books, is where I found the lists of different literature.
So here goes the British Literature list. How many have you read from this list?

British Literature

Emma- Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen

Sense and Sensibility- Jane Austen

Peter Pan- J.M. Barrie

Jane Eyre- Charlotte Bronte

Wuthering Heights- Emily Bronte

Alice in Wonderland- Lewis Carroll

Robinson Crusoe- Daniel Defoe

A Christmas Carol and Other Holiday Tales- Charles Dickens

Great Expectations- Charles Dickens

A Tale of Two Cities- Charles Dickens

A Passage to India- E.M. Forster

The Sonnets and Other Love Poems- William Shakespeare

Three Romantic Tragedies- William Shakespeare

Frankenstein- Mary Shelley

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Strange Tales- Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Island- Robert Louis Stevenson

Dracula- Bram Stoker

Gulliver's Travel- Jonathan Swift

The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds- H.G. Wells

The Picture of Dorian Gray- Oscar Wilde

Thats the end of that list. I have heard of these stories but have not read very many. So I definitely got some British reading to do! I hope I've inspired you today to pick up one of these British Literature books.

Pa...Pa...Pa...Peter...

Peter Pan! Yep, that's the next book my son and I are reading together. We are only on the second chapter and I have to tell you, I already like it better than The Adventures of Alice and Wonderland.

I don't think I've ever watched the Disney movie of Peter Pan as a child.

But I do remember watching this one with Mary Martin when I was a child....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OxrR72sUrg

The first time I watched it, I had spent the night at my Grandma & Grandpa C.'s house. So every time that I had seen it growing up, it always reminded me of them. The YouTube clip above said that it was first broad casted in 1960 for NBC. It has since been out of DVD production. And to own it is very expensive. Oh I would just love to own this classic for my grandchildren to watch. I just love it. It just reminds me of just being a plain ole' kid again. I just love it.
My son and I got to the famous second chapter....The Shadow. The funny thing that I wanted to share with you though is that Nana in Peter Pan is NOT the nanny. Well........it's............the dog. Hey I don't know how I thought it was the nanny. But when the Dad starts talking about Nana having to go outside, well it dawned on me that Nana was not the nanny. The Dad didn't like Nana but the mother does. Even with the quote from the Mom (Mrs. Darling)...."George, Nana is a treasure."
And then Mr. Darling responds...."No doubt, but I have an uneasy feeling at times that she looks upon the children as puppies."
I still did not get it at this point that Nana was a dog. I did think the quote was a bit strange. But what do expect....It's British Literature. Another post on that coming soon.
Then the story goes on to talk about the Dad putting medicine in Nana's bowl. But it still did not dawn on me. I just figured the British liked to drink out of bowls or something. Man I must have been out to lunch or something. The last page of the second chapter started to talk about Nana's bark. Nana's bark? Nana's bark?
Then the Mr. Darling says something like, "The proper place for you is in the yard, and there you will be tied up this instant."
I don't know if my son thought Nana was the nanny or the dog, but I told him at this point.....Nana is not a dog!
I can't wait till my son comes home from school tomorrow so that we can read another chapter of Peter Pan!

I love the weekend.......

Yesterday for the football game, I made a few snacks.
Smokie kabobs...

So easy to make. I just added little smokies, chunks of pineapple, an olive, with a cube of cheese on top of toothpicks. Here's the recipe.

Then I made Touchdown Puffs.

Very easy to make. It's just Bisquick with some chopped pepperoni and green onions, which I forgot. You can dip it in some honey mustard. Here's the recipe.

That was Saturday. This is Sunday.......

We love Sunday's around here. It's the day of rest. The Lord's day. I was going to add our brunch we had after church but I forgot to take pic's. I guess I was to hungry to think about taking a picture. I hope you all had a great weekend!
I will be taking a break from blogging. I've been blogging for a year. And it's something that I have been thinking about for awhile now. I'm not sure for how long. But it will probably for some time. There a no hardships in the time being. But just feel that I need to take a break because I'm not giving my blog and my fellow bloggers 100% of my time right now. I have met some really wonderful people here in blog land. I wish I could meet you all in person. You all have visited my blog, time and time again and left really sweet comments and have been wonderful fans of my blog. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I truly loved reading your comments. They have all meant so much to me.
I will change my blog as the seasons change to try and keep up with it. I will stop by your blogs every now and then and see how you all are doing and with that, I may or may not leave a comment, but I will try sometimes. I might even post once in awhile but not to frequently.
And I do keep all of your needs in my prayers. Because you ladies are my blogging friends. I hope you will take the time to view my favorite blogging friends and to reach out to them. Because they truly are wonderful ladies with unique talents and I know that you will enjoy their blogs, as much as I have. With that........
I'm signing off.............from Peek-A-Boo Street! (salute)

Autumn Leaves......

Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves, autumn leaves
Lie strewn around me here,
Autumn leaves, autumn leaves,
How sad, how cold, how drear!
How like the hopes of childhood's day,
Thick clust'ring on the bough!
How like those hopes in their decay-
How faded are they now!
Withered leaves, withered leaves,
That fly before the gale;
Withered leaves, withered leaves,
Ye tell a mournful tale
Of love once true, and friends once kind,
And happy moments fled:
Dispersed by every breath of wind,
Forgotten, changed, or dead.

By Charles Dickens (English, 1812-1870)
